5 Electronic Measuring Instruments That Are A Must-Have For Every Engineer

The instruments that measure the basic electrical quantities, such as voltage and current are known as the measuring instruments. For all work on electronic installations that carry mains voltage or are to be operated with mains voltage, safety comes first. Therefore every person working with electrical cables or electrical components will need a series of measuring devices. 

1) Digital Multimeter

A digital multimeter combines various measuring devices in the same device such as a voltmeter to measure the voltage, an ammeter for current, and an ohmmeter for resistance. It is an electronic instrument that has an analog/digital converter that provides a digital readout. This increases the precision in reading the values. With the advent of integrated circuits, the size, cost, and power requirements of digital multimeters have drastically diminished. Digital multimeters can also be used in testing continuity, capacitors, diodes, and transistors. However, some advanced digital multimeters can measure the frequency as well. 

2) Logic Analyzer 

A logic analyzer is an electronic instrument that captures and displays multiple signals from a digital system or digital circuit. They meet the demands of the users who want to understand and investigate the operation of these circuits. It is used for verifying and debugging the operation of digital designs and correlate a large number of digital signals. It is an important form of test instrumentation that enables engineers and developers to see exactly what is happening within logic circuits. 

3) Spectrum Analyzer

A spectrum analyzer is used to determine the bandwidth of a digital or analog signal. It is an electronic measuring instrument that shows the signal strength when it is varied concerning signal frequency. A spectrum analyzer is widely used amongst radio analyzers as it is very helpful in analyzing a wide range of frequencies of audio signals. The frequency of the signal appears on the horizontal bar and the signal strength or the amplitude appears on the vertical bar. All in all, we can say that a spectrum analysis can be used for spectrum analysis.

4) Oscilloscope

Oscilloscopes can graphically represent different electrical voltages in a configurable time window. A two-dimensional characteristic graph is created on the screen and the horizontal axis represents time and the vertical axis the corresponding voltage. Only an oscilloscope can detect the voltage form and correctly measure the values. Henceforth, an oscilloscope is the most important tool for electrical engineers to keep a check on the proper functioning of certain parts and the operation requires technical knowledge. 

5) LCR Meter and impedance analyzer

LCR meters are measuring instruments used in measuring a physical property known as impedance whereas impedance indicates resistance to the flow of an AC. It is very helpful for an engineer to test frequency range, device or application type, and accuracy requirements. 

Therefore, a digital multimeter, logic analyzer, spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, and LCR Meter, and impedance analyzer are the electronic measuring instruments that would make the work of an engineer much easier.
